I think sometimes about the fact that Jeanne Calment has been the oldest human ever for almost my entire life, has held it for the past 17 years after dying 122yo, the closest runner up so far was still 3 years younger, and the current oldest human is only 115. (And she smoked.)
It almost seems like people aren't living as long...maybe the reason for calment is just clerical error, which is probably falling with time.

You would think so, but there's nobody like her in GRG before when records should've been much worse; and she wasn't born in the boonbocks but heavily bureaucratized 1875 France to a middle-class (and very long-lived themselves) family, had a well-recorded education etc.

There is always the running theory that her daughter managed to subsume her identity in the 30s for insurance reasons. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/study-questions-age-worlds-oldest-woman-180971153/ … Her ever-growing strength as an outlier does lend some weight to the argument, and it may well be the maximum likelihood explanation.
