I'm skeptical of this. Theoretical vs practical does not account for the fact that people are divided based on the ideal society they pursue, ie values. Some of those divides are ancient (how to relate to outsiders, tradition vs progress, authority vs freedom, property rights).
I don't really know how influential they are. I think they punch above their weight class because of peculiarities of the US election process i.e. the Iowa caucus. I am certain artisans skew right. One reason is how taxes are deducted.

A plumber earns income and then must remit tax quarterly (estimated taxes) and must pay payroll taxes himself, whereas someone employed by a co. has the taxes deducted immediately (out of sight & mind) and doesn't pay payroll taxes. The employee then usually gets a refund.

Yeah I know the process. My point is there are other factors, maybe plumbers care about free healthcare even more or tend to be immigrants or something. What's really surprising to me is that in France they don't deduct your taxes, you pay them yourself end of the year.

Would be interesting to see some data on how well profession predicts politics. If only to leave the usual narratives behind. According to this you're right about plumbers but not carpenters :) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/06/03/why-your-flight-attendant-is-probably-a-democrat/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.f968b3f5f2ac …

I think there's a lot of lying that goes on in these polls.
