And not just on twitter. I generally feel this is an era of intellectual desolation. Most groundbreaking ideas are yet another smartphone app or recycling and watering down a 100 yo political creed.

Why should innovation progress at a steady rate at the macro level? It doesn't at the micro level. It's not even possible to compare innovation between eras - too hard. People chase what makes money at the time and for the past 30-40 years it's been bits, not atoms.
