/ This by @amyyqin reminds me of my trip to Hainan Island in 2014 to visit my father’s ancestral village. My dad was born and raised in Shanghai, but is actually Hainanese, whereas my brother and I are born-and-bred Singaporeans.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/05/world/asia/singapore-china.html …

/ It was a trip that provided a lot of food for thought about identity and belonging for me. I did enjoy myself there, but also spent a lot of time feeling out of place, struggling to relate to the people I met—all of whom were meant to be related to me in some way.

/ People were constantly telling me they were some uncle or auntie or cousin, but were at the same time complete strangers. They were saying things like “you’ve finally come home!” but “home”, to me, is very much Singapore. That was the first time I’d ever laid eyes on Hainan.

/ I spent a lot of time feeling like I was supposed to be experiencing some emotional connection or reaction about “returning” to my roots that I couldn’t quite conjure up, because the roots that I know are firmly planted not in Hainan, but on another island.

/ Ultimately I appreciated seeing Hainan and know that I have some family history there, but I left feeling more Singaporean than ever. So yeah, China has a tendency to conflate 华侨 with 华人, but I’m not sure how far they’ll get with the average young Chinese Singaporean.

/ What’s also worrying: efforts to conflate 华人 with the CCP. When I argue with my dad about China and criticise the Chinese government, it gets very quickly conflated with “why are you not proud of the motherland” and “why are you not proud of your Chinese heritage?”
