Just played a little chess match with a friend. There's a big misconception about chess. People think it's about strategy and that skill in it is transferrable to other things. Both are wrong.
There's hardly any strategy in chess, especially at most peoples' level, and visual pattern recognition ability is what determines success. Outside of the mental workout it gives you, chess training will not benefit you outside of chess.

I think it depends what the time control is. In blitz there is little strategy and mostly pattern recognition ("tactics"). In longer time controls there is more time to think strategically. Also, I agree with you that it's highly level dependent.
