But they DO prevent building exactly the kind of infrastructure that agriculture needs to survive when development in the neighborhood drives land prices up: Greenhouses, creameries, mushroom farms, etc.

Land preservation trusts are awesome, if you think of farms as a real estate instrument: open landscapes that you keep around because they look nice and hold up nearby property values.

If you think of farms as places to grow food, land preservation trusts can create a lot of perverse incentives that drive just the opposite. They can just drive land use away from productive farming towards Marie Antoinette-style play ranches.
