What's a more LONG-TERM effective incentive: Do X and I will give you Y dollars? Do X. After X is completed, Y dollars are awarded, as a surprise.
Is the employee aware of B before receiving it? To be clear, I am envisioning X as a project that is performed while their usual responsibilities are completed.

You can only surprise them with B once. After that they’ll expect it lol. First time u can prob lay out expectations w/ A and have metrics in mind for B. If they achieve the metrics, give them B & explain why. Keep it simple but that surprise for work well done really helps imo

Do you really think the surprising has a lasting effect? Internally, what would they think in order for it to positively affect future work: "At [possibly seemingly random intervals] times, I am rewarded for work that my boss thinks is good."
