A few years ago we started sampling from swordtail hybrid populations we hadn’t previously collected from. We were surprised to find that many individuals had unusual melanin phenotypes emanating from spotting patterns on their fins.

These melanin spots originate from one of the parental species (X. birchmanni). Histology and gene expression showed that in hybrids some of these spots had become malignant melanomas. In some hybrid populations, rates of melanomas reached ~20%.
