We made hybrid populations with two species pairs of Drosophila. After 20 generations, the genomes and phenotypes of the admixed populations resembled one of the parental species. With

Happy 2020! With the holidays behind us, wanted to highlight a few key take-aways from our preprint: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2019.12.21.886093v1 …. Our study focuses on a basic question: how do gut microbial communities respond to routine antibiotic treatments?

We also found evidence for strong viability selection against the melanoma incompatibility in natural hybrid populations. Puzzlingly, the melanoma is maintained at moderate frequencies in some populations, which we are excited to dig into in future work.

We used a variety of approaches to fine map the genes involved in this incompatibility, ultimately identifying an interaction between cd97 and xmrk. This was surprising because xmrk causes melanoma in a distantly related swordtail cross, that does not hybridize in the wild.

These melanin spots originate from one of the parental species (X. birchmanni). Histology and gene expression showed that in hybrids some of these spots had become malignant melanomas. In some hybrid populations, rates of melanomas reached ~20%.
