A talented ugrad in my lab spent ~$1500 to apply to chem phd programs. Including GRE exam fees, GRE score fees, and program fees. Ironically, she was also asked by several programs to articulate how to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The toad fly lays its eggs in an unusual place: a toad’s nostrils. When its eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the toad’s face and body. Unfortunately, this leads to the toad’s demise. [📸: MallaurieBrach]

A common toad sits in shallow water. Its body is above the water's surface. You can see the fly's larva in its nostrils; they looks like little white gelatinous balls stuffed in each of the toad's nostrils.

Our reintroduced mountain yellow-legged frogs are making our lives difficult by moving wayyy upstream. In the below animation each color = a different individual. The frogs keep moving out of our survey transect. Here's to many months of climbing new waterfalls to find them.

Earning a Master's instead of a PhD is not a downgrade. The best degree to earn is the one that is right for you and will get you where you want to go in your career. More advice on how to make that decision in my latest column in :
