Ded reckoning (short for Dedekind reckoning) is the process of determining your location on a line by keeping track of which rationals were below your last known location, which rationals are below your average speed since then, and which rationals are below the time elapsed.

This term has also been used to describe a related technique in higher dimensions involving approximations of those quantities, though this would more accurately be called Cauchy reckoning.
