The women athletes appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee today are stunningly courageous. It requires immense strength to share such heartbreaking stories, but their words speak truth to power. We must ensure institutions protect our athletes & young people from abuse.

A test: does what we choose to watch, read & hear make us angry and vengeful or alternatively, does what we choose to watch, read & hear make us more appreciative, hopeful, empathetic and loving? That choice shapes who we and our nation will become; “as a man thinketh, so is he.”

What struck me the most after the attacks on 9/11 was the unity we felt as Americans for our country–the boundaries between us seemed to disappear.   May the memory of those we lost inspire us to heal our divisions and unite us on our path forward to meet the challenges ahead.

Today, the flood of emotions returns: crushing sorrow for the lost, heartache for the loved ones, glory laden appreciation for the heroes. May our hearts be filled with their memory, and our souls with their love for family and country.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, we think of those who lost their lives that tragic day and all of those who have bled and died for our freedom. May we continue to look to the American flag as a symbol of their sacrifice.

Truth matters: Leaving Americans and thousands upon thousands of our Afghan partners behind is not success—it offends our values and aspirations. Mr. President, bring them home.

This loss tears at our collective soul. As we read their stories, it is apparent that these brave men and women truly represent our very best and finest. God bless our fallen servicemembers. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. You will not be forgotten 🇺🇸

Jacques was a magnificent leader who greatly exemplified Olympic values—excellence, friendship and respect. He has shaped the Olympic movement for the better. It was a true honor to serve alongside him in 2002. My prayers are with his family and loved ones.

One of Utah’s own laid down his life to protect Americans and Afghans alike. Ann and I send our deepest condolences to Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover’s loved ones. We are in debt to him and his family for their sacrifice.

They represented the very best and finest of America, laying down their lives to aid the most vulnerable in perilous circumstances. This loss of life tears at our collective soul. God bless our fallen & wounded Marines, their families and all of our servicemembers in harm’s way.

Horrific terrorist attacks outside Kabul airport. My heart breaks for the U.S. servicemembers wounded in the explosion and the innocent Afghan lives lost. I am inspired by the strength and compassion of our troops and pray for their safety.

My statement on the President’s decision to keep the August 31 deadline in place to withdraw from Afghanistan:

The President committed that we will leave no American or Afghan partner behind. Our greatness, our humanity, and our national security demand that he not retreat from that promise.

The Administration cannot continue to defend the indefensible: Civilian citizens and our Afghan partners should always leave first—then the military. We cannot abruptly abandon the people who helped us over the past 20 years and leave them to face the Taliban alone.

    My statement on Afghanistan:

We must, must evacuate our Afghan partners. The President must fully commit to this and make clear to the Taliban that impeding such will be met with full military force.

I understand but disagree with those who felt we should leave Afghanistan; I cannot understand why it has been done with such tragic human cost; without an effective strategy to defend our partners; and with inestimable shock to our nation’s credibility, reliability, and honor.

America must not stand idly by as our Afghan friends are brutalized by the Taliban. For honor, for meaning of lives lost, and for simple humanity, the President must urgently rush to defend, rescue, and give and expand asylum. There is no time to spare.

The Biden administration’s unwillingness to alter the Afghan withdrawal plan based on changing circumstances on the ground & the grave implications for US security interests is a tragedy & a cause for serious concern about how the administration will deal with global challenges.
