The word is out. New country, new life for me in 2020. Starting April, I will be the Turkey-correspondent (based in Istanbul) for the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. I will truly miss the Balkans, but it’s time for new endeavors.

This eve as took the podium for the 1st time as Kosovo premier, he addressed MPs in Albanian, Bosnian/Serbian, and Turkish. It was a small but meaningful sign of respect. When he did the same (w addition of Romani) during preceding debate, opposition MPs sniggered.

Serbia’s leading opposition bloc says it’ll boycott next parliamentary elxn. Boycotts have emerged as primary strategy of opposition parties in illiberal regimes in W. Balkans but they’re ineffective. You can’t prove elxn fraud if you don’t participate.

Millions of Romanians are migrants abroad so a bakery in Transylvania has to employ 2 Sri Lankans migrants to bake - hundreds then protest against them. That is modern Europe. Sigh.

Serbia’s satirical website writes that the air pollution in Belgrade is so bad, that the Coronavirus has no chance of surviving here. Citizens don’t have to worry and should be proud!

In case you missed it, video of the week: Dutch PM checks his bike into a big underground parking place. Attendant (of Kurdish origin) is amazed: “He has to check in and out like a normal person! This is how you run a country. I’m never leaving”

The forgotten Holocaust story. “A majority of the Roma never even made it to the camps, they were simply murdered whenever they were found, and their deaths went unrecorded” - Intense but important read. Let’s not forget about them, then and now.

Best analysis so far of yesterday’s Belgrade-Pristina aviation deal, by ⁦⁩. Nobody knows how and when flights will reopen, but one thing this deal does show: EU’s role in Kosovo vs Serbia is weaker than ever &American influence is up

Pristina-Belgrade flights. Would be great, but I doubt they will happen for years. The greatest beneficiary will be Air Serbia because Belgrade has become an important regional hub.
