Yesterday, Chika would have turned 13. A teenager! I stumbled upon this clip when she was four and healthy and laughing at one of my mistakes, which she loved to do. We miss her every day, more than we can say.
3 yrs ago today, we said goodbye to our most precious little girl, Chika, on a sunny April afternoon, not unlike one in her homeland of Haiti. Although she survived an earthquake when she was three days old, she ultimately lost her battle with a terrible disease, #DIPG at 7 ...
Always exciting to get a galley for an upcoming book, but what I'm feeling about holding this one is something more than the "new book thrill." This one means more to me than anything I’ve ever written. A smile and a few tears when I saw it.

Eight years ago today, the earth shook and nearly 3% of Haiti’s population died, and 10% became homeless. A few weeks later, I went there and my life changed. Today, 47 children are at our orphanage in Port Au Prince and they are the lights of our lives.

Heading back to my alma mater tonight, where I met Morrie, to talk about the wisdom I learned not from him but from a precious child, Chika. Haven’t been back in a long, long time. Think they’ll remember me? I have, essentially, the same haircut.
My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Pittsburgh and The Tree of Life Synagogue. It used to be places of worship were, literally and figuratively, sanctuaries. Now they are becoming targets. This is not who we are.

Two years ago, we lost the light of our lives. Chika Jeune, who died at 7, taught us more about love than we could ever have learned ourselves. Today, in Haiti, we visited her grave. The stone says "I Am A Child Of God." She was. Is. Always will be.

The best part of yesterday's birthday tradition? Spending it with people I love. This year I’m so proud to have two of our graduates from #HaveFaithHaiti orphanage/school who are now in college here in America, Manno and Siem. They kept up with the eating as well!
