So as a Linux sysad, how do I personally gain experience on mainframes like this? The companies I've worked for never had mainframes. Supers, yes, but they too were Linux. Lucking out on a company having this, and willing to train me doesn't seem like a good answer...

That last bit really comes across like advertising, not just like an excited employee who loves what they're working on. When you do that, but also say they're not responsible for your tweets... I'm having trust issues here.
I can see how that comes across. I can tell you I truly mean everything I say. To a fault. I’m always honest, even when it’s something you don’t want to hear. I think mainframes are amazing and have gotten a bad rap for way too many years. I want the world to know the truth.

For real are we comparing enterprise grade hardware like mainframes - a core of modern banking system embedded so deeply no-one dares to touch them to (pardon quoting "Silicon Valley") "a banged up 15-inch MacBook Pro with shitty stickers on it, 1.3 chip and only 2gb of ram"?
