After the anti-trans mob descended on the Berkeley Twitter account for having posted an interview with me, the Dean of Arts and Humanities has put out a maximally vague statement defending the principle of academic freedom. Watch these people double down on ignorance. https://twitter.com/UCBerkeley/status/1404969919310041088 …pic.twitter.com/AjavKdB4d7

Some are suggesting that humanistic research should be “fact checked” by science departments before publication. The people making this suggestion believe themselves to be feminists. It is... not a good idea, and it isn’t consistent with the principle of academic freedom.

It occurred to me that people might be interested in the basis for the claims I make about my research in the interview. Here’s a short piece I wrote for Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers.https://legacywomenwriters.org/2020/09/22/what-is-a-female-author/ …

Oh, and here is a thread explaining the difference between “academic freedom” and “free speech”: fundamentally different kinds of rights-claim that anti-trans bigots have sought to collapse into each other, with some success:https://twitter.com/graceelavery/status/1141733087719460865 …

No, no, no. My objection to the Times letter was that it misused the phrase “academic freedom.” That term describes the academy’s collective right to seek truth unfettered by external influence. Stonewall is charged with regulates the speech and conduct of staff, not their ideas. https://twitter.com/ewansomerville/status/1141498771790061568 … pic.twitter.com/sfq6vTkPyV

Thanks to all my colleagues and friends who have written to share that my work has been useful to them, or to their students. It has been disturbing and painful—though of course by this point also unsurprising—to find my scholarship at the centre of a massive online dogpile.

My hope for my critics remains the same: that they will consider rereading George Eliot’s wonderful journals and letters, which detail complex, powerful, and ambivalent ideas about gender, sexuality, and authorship.
