There are many subway tunnels in seismically active areas (think Tokyo). We have never seen a collapse of a tunnel in an earthquake. A couple of places where the tunnel entrance had some damage. Earthquake shaking is amplified at the surface so underground gets less shaking.

I don't think it's lack of reason so much as primal fear. As much as I know I might be safer in a BART tunnel during an earthquake I still don't think I would want to be in the trans bay tube. Lizard brain takes over.
