So much in this about who is able to choose topics & be validated by academic structures (often - altho not always - cishetwhitemen) and how more pressure, constraint, judgement, scrutiny & blatant discrimination placed on those who don’t embody or conform to these standards.

And just to say so much of this is simply ‘not seen’ by those in positions of power/privilege in academia. Even those actively embracing fighting structural prejudices & inequalities don’t seem how they are - in so many ways - reinforcing & perpetuating these practices.

It’s also a lack of expertise. Because there are few black academics and white academics teach very narrow white curricula, students fail to get the expert support they deserve. Making it harder to do well and progress to PhD and beyond - and round and round it goes.

I have stories! I remember a self-funded African PhD student I had to advise to request a change of supervisor. The supervision was essential a long litany of micro-aggressions about the research question, area of focus, process and content. He was afraid of being 'difficult'

That’s unfortunate but I hope everything worked out for him. As you can see the environment has not changed much but we are talking about it
