Since a lot of people have asked, here's what hiding the notch on the Pixel 3 XL looks like when using the built-in Developer Option. Left: Pixel 2 XL. Right: Pixel 3 XL. As @joshuatopolsky said, it basically becomes a Pixel 2 XL.pic.twitter.com/vq677xXGyK

Still working on an article with lots of smaller details, followed by a full review.

Is there an option to make the bar black but use the space?

Not by default, but we made an app that does that.https://www.xda-developers.com/hide-notch-huawei-p20-essential-phone-oneplus-6-asus-zenfone-5/ …

that's weird, why don't they just move the status bar in the black area and leave it without color?

Look at the picture with the notched area as the status bars. You can't see all the status symbols, it's a mess. You have more screen space yet have less information in your status bar.

note that he has the battery percentage enabled, which was a choice. if you want to roll with it in the status bar, you can disable that and it has enough room for every indicator.

Getting rid of function isn't a solution to the problem.

If I want to use the area around the notch so I have more room for apps, you're going to have compromise, that's the point of choice. if you don't wanna lose functionality, either remove the notch (lol) or, don't use that option and use a separate option.

There's no need to compromise with this option for me it's all positive. You get a smaller screen and get to see more information. Your point is that in order to see that information I should just remove other information?

so why are you explaining that to me? You asked why do it this way instead of the way you said so I answered.

So I think someone from XDA will think of a way to make that black bar area useful. Maybe put weather status or something. Dunno.

People can hate all they want - I think @madebygoogle @android really found a very well balanced design option to please both - People who do and who don´t like a notch. Avoided copying the "apple-notch", added value with the 2nd cam! Also rule of thirds design wise 👌pic.twitter.com/Jm1Pb99X4A
