I've realized that just like for centrifuges, we probably need to start reporting centrifugal force in our methods when using orbital shakers. rpm means nothing without the orbit diameter. And for organoids, the force is key, not just shaking speed!

Being a lab biologist is just moving small amounts of liquid from one container to another over and over again until you die

Well, world events tried to make me feel like crap today, but a quick trip to the lab a look down the microscope at something highly expected, turned it all around! 😁

We've started a new Google group dedicated to Brain organoids. Check it out and join us! We want to create an open community to discuss methods, technical difficulties, and uses of organoids:

...there do seem to be differences between different protocols and different labs and that is something we have to work on as a community.

This is what I have been saying for a long time. Of course they are not actually miniature brains, far from it. Seems like the overhyping is often from those newer to a field, while I have tried to be clear in my seminars where they fail. That said...

Here's your periodic reminder that basic research is only "useless" until it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world. 20 years ago, coronavirology was an obscure sub-field the public never heard about. Good thing we funded it anyway.

Looks like a great course! Sergiu and his students/postdocs are doing an important community service by running this.

It is very inspiring to have my lab now in the same division that Crick first started in the LMB in 1962. The signed chalk board next to my lab is a reminder of his presence. He had such foresight!

Growing human tissues from stem cells in 3D culture has the potential to revolutionise the drug discovery process and regenerative medicine. Thanks to cell and developmental biology, organoids resembling human tissues have been created. 📩Submit abstract by 15 July

They came back alive! The picture shows neural outgrowth from human neural organoids after they returned to our lab after more than a month on the International Space Station.
