6/ When thinking about attack surfaces, Facebook, or the attorney general, or a dozen FBI agents are very minor, even trivial threats to our democracy. The power of the president in the US means that the president is a much much greater potential threat.

@NickSzabo4 I'm trying to avoid all tribalism and even all specific talking points in this thread. Genuinely curious about how you think about the attack surface of a democracy. I think I'm applying very similar thinking to your arguments about Bitcoin's governance in this thread

If you replaced Trump with the abuse & over reach of presidential power, I fully agree with you. Example I see no clear distinction between Bush/Obama. Both engaged in violent regime change. Yet so far the real estate agent is peaceful relative to predecessors. Syria, N.Korea

Obama and Bush didn’t seek to dismantle the checks on their power in such blatant ways. Not saying they didn’t do it all, but nothing like this.

There are no checks, examples. Bush admin lied about Iraq, faced no consequences. Obama toppled Libya without a declaration of war from Congress. Bush/Obama allowed mass surveillance on citizens. Legal checks failed. But decentralized money & opinion on social media may work.

False equivalency. Checks on lying and mass surveillance are trivial compared to checks on a president (possibly) criminally meddling in his own election, firing those investigating his conduct, and threatening to pardon himself for those crimes.

Ari I love you man, and know you mean well. The lie was not trivial, justified a war which consumed something north of 400k people. There must be accountability here. Centralization of unaccountable power is the problem. Both with the Presidency & the unchanging bureaucracies.

I'm not arguing against accountability for everything. I'm arguing that it makes sense to differentiate different scales of problems. Some are existential threats to US democracy, others are not.

I see pedantic lobbyists who call themselves the Press coordinating with unelected bureaucrats to remove a democratically elected president. If successful likely the end of the American experiment. What do you see?

Average American is thought to commit around three felonies per day. They can put anyone in a cage.https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748704471504574438900830760842 …

Trump can pardon himself and has threatened to do so, even if an AG brings case, and jury of his peers convict, and he loses multiple appeals. Think of how many extraordinary things have to happen to remove a criminal from office. Far more problematic if we can’t remove.

Given 1) Every American is a felon, if they choose to prosecute. (Above link) 2) Great atrocities occurred under Bush-Obama. Iraq, Lybia, nearly Syria. Over a half million dead. No prosecution. What crime are you advocating Trump - elected to stop atrocities - be tried for?
