Fair enough. My point was that boys without fathers tend to find one somewhere, whether that's the alpha dog in a gang, or a celebrity idol to obsess over. Looking for dad in all the wrong places.

Father could certainly effect a child's values, preventing things like gang involvement. But we're memetic animals. We copy what we value and as teens we rarely value parents. My guess is mentorship in most cases comes from outside the immediate family.
