Again, with about 40 percent still to come in, it's Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders ahead of the pack, and the candidate running on electability, Joe Biden, in fourth.

  3. We await an announcement momentarily from the Iowa Democratic Party. Results are expected very soon. Will all candidates have faith in these numbers? And will party officials take questions from journalists about this mess?

This is also a reminder that the political parties run the . It is NOT overseen by the Iowa Secretary of State's Office or your county auditor. But we encourage everyone who is interested to participate and cherish our unique First-in-the-Nation status.

shall take a moment to caution reporters who do not typically report on election administration that incompetence is a much more likely explanation for all problems than malice

Good morning! Still no results. The state party says to “expect” them later today. Listen to and myself on this morning as we try to make sense of something that makes no sense

  7. This. This is why I avoid any apocalyptic language about election issues. Tonight has been disorganized and opaque but it will lead to a result at the end of this year that the U.S. should be confident in.

  8. One more point I didn't make here that needs to be emphasized. Government officials have basically no oversight over the party-run caucus process. Thousands of election officials spend their lives thinking about voting. They do not run the first election of the presidential year

  10. So. Onward. I'll talk to our friends at in a little while. We just posted a brand new podcast to your feeds. And I'm headed to Des Moines in the morning to try and pick up some pieces.

  11. And politicians have always seized on people's lack of nuanced understanding of elections, to peddle narratives that suit them.

  12. Votes take a while to count in lots of elections, which isn't a bad thing! Despite what politicians often try to say

  13. Voting experts talk about how elections should be about accuracy and not speed. Had Iowa said from the get-go that results could be a post-midnight or early morning Tuesday affair, this would be less trying on the public's confidence. It's that dissonance that creates doubt

  14. Last point. A huge part of this mess is a self inflicted wound from the state party. They pushed the idea that results could be in as early as 9 or 10 ET. Despite a new tech being rolled out Despite new rules being rolled out Despite big turnout expected

  15. 4) The big question honestly, comes down to WHAT HAPPENED? The state party has been very vague in its statements tonight-- "inconsistencies in the reporting of three sets of results". I can't say for certain what that means exactly. Would love cyber folks to weigh in

  16. "This is a reminder of why phone and app based voting are not ready for prime time" election cyber expert DM'd me tonight

  17. 3) What does this mean for Iowa going forward? A month ago, the state party had said they were still hoping mobile caucusing (as in -- caucusing by smartphone) could be in place for 2024. How does tonight change what the future of the caucuses looks like?

  18. Information and elections experts say that lack of info creates a real hotbed for disinformation. We saw a Trump campaign manager push a narrative of a "rigged" caucus without any evidence. Claims like that can go viral if there isn't contrary evidence immediately

  19. 1) Who developed the app? Have seen lots of finger pointing at a newish DC based tech firm but I haven't confirmed yet. 2) Why was the party so secretive about development process? As tonight unfolded, media and the public had little real information to go off of.

  20. So we know that the app had (maybe predictable) issues, but the party says NOT a hack or cyber attack. And we know it was hard to get through on the phone lines. What questions do we still have?

  21. I wasn't told an exact number but "at least a dozen" was tossed out there. There are more than 1,600 precinct leaders who need to transmit results. One leader said he tried calling for 40 minutes before giving up on the busy signal
