In 3 preregistered cross-cultural studies (2 field studies in Fiji and 1 online study in Israel, Total N = 1,111) we find that religious people believe that God values the lives of ethnic/religious outgroup members more than they do themselves.

Using culturally appropriate moral dilemmas, co-developed with local research assistants in Fiji, participants first indicated whether an ingroup member should sacrifice his life to save 5 ingroup or outgroup members. Next, we asked them what they thought God would prefer.

Compared with themselves, individuals thought God would more strongly approve of an ingroup member saving outgroup members. When individuals themselves were biased (wanted to save ingroup members more than outgroup members), they saw God as endorsing less ingroup favoritism.

This research contributes to the literature on Big God beliefs and intergroup relations by showing how such beliefs may be associated with universal, as opposed to parochial, moral reasoning. An implication is that belief in God may facilitate intergroup tolerance.

I'm particularly proud of this research because it involved two field trips from our team to Fiji, where we conducted two studies with three ethno-religious groups, allowing us to build theory in a non-WEIRD context with a history of ethno-religious conflict.

Conducting this research would not have been possible without a great team of collaborators, a stellar crew of more than 15 local research assistants (who were Christian iTaukei, Hindu Indo-Fijian, and Muslim Indo-Fijian), or without generous support from

This is so cool and an important example of why we need to move beyond WEIRD samples and how we can go about doing it.
