    Removing copyright from books after 30 years doesn't mean readers will get them for free. It simply means that publishers, TV, film and game producers will be able to monetize them for free, without paying the authors.

    Moreover, how to legislate this? 1) Author Life +: Authors incorporate, the corp becomes the author and the corp never dies. 2) In year 29, I revise a book, so the new edition gets 30 years, later rinse repeat. (Which is how drug patents work.)

    30 years is a non-starter, since we have a 35 year contract termination clause in copyright law, so either you reduce that to 12 years, or kick the limit later. The real question is WHY is IP treated differently than material property? Why is that right?

    I’m gonna do a serious post about this — books that are 30 years old should be in the public domain and just available at least in digital form basically for free forever. Unlike with most “cancel” stuff there’s a bona fide policy issue here with broad implications.

    The person who said 30 years copyright for books should be the law is silly, but most people are not bothering to explain why & folks who don't know about books are saying things like 'but books don't make money after 30 years' So, follow me as I explain the life cycle of books.

    Putting the Citybooks together was some of the best work Flying Buffalo ever did, and some of the most fun. Definitely worth a look.
