30 Rock is great! 30 Rock has some problematic elements! I wrote a book exploring the nuances of this show — great comedy means taking big swings — and I dove deep on where it fell short for Vanity Fair. Get your copy of The 30 Rock Book here: abramsbooks.com/product/30-roc #30Rock

“It’s easy for a show like 30 Rock to punch down without even realizing that it’s punching”: The author of a new book about the series explores celebrating its triumphs without overlooking the troubling way it handled race. vntyfr.com/2n1no4g

As someone who just started watching DS9 so that I could understand the Star Trek RPG I'm participating in, love this for my British compatriots:

Also, a lot easier to experiment for folks who don’t have sensory issues/etc. Grew up in a home where, whenever I asked how to do something, I got told to figure it out myself. I taught myself a lot of things! Would’ve been nice to have grown up in a less messed up home 🤷🏽‍♂️ 💫

There is a privilege to being taught how to cook by your parents or at the very least empowered to use the kitchen, it's called "my parents weren't neglectful". People on this app will really take the most ungenerous reading of a tweet possible and congratulate themselves for it.

Excited to see what pops up in this moment, if Twitter rises to the challenge, etc.

Seriously though: Facebook is a wasteland, Twitter in turmoil, Instagram has collapsed trying to be TikTok, and TikTok isn't a social network. If you wanted to start a social network, this would be the best time in 10 years to try that.

I can't stop thinking about Kit Connor having no choice to come out and the pressure around art lately where everyone MUST be willing to rip their heart open and stick their labels on their foreheads to qualify for things. I've said it before and I'll say it again it's dangerous.

Hope those of you that were fired up about my “we shouldn’t force actors to out themselves to play queer” and “actors are people too” takes have a real second thought today So sorry for the way this happened, Kit. I hope you are at least safe and have the support you need 💛

Watch for symptoms and test, AFF friends — and try to confirm with a PCR lab test, if possible. #AFF29

Whelp, Covid finally got me. I got it at Austin Film Festival, despite my best efforts at masking. If you had contact with me, please take precautions and test yourself. (To be clear, I isolated myself as soon as I felt sick Saturday night. Tested negative until yesterday pm).

AFF is Comic-Con for screenwriters, so if you’re Black and enjoy writing, check out this generous opportunity:

Call me crazy for doing this as an emerging writer, but I'd love to sponsor a Conference Badge for another emerging Black screenwriter to attend next year's @austinfilmfest. Probably want no parts in screening the interest there, so if there's an org that would, much better 😆

Wait, a mega-merger being blocked? What alternate America have I awoken in? It's Halloween — this is a Twilight Zone episode, isn't it? MY GLASSES!

A federal judge has blocked Penguin Random House’s prospective purchase of Simon & Schuster. The merger would have united two of the country’s largest book publishers. bit.ly/3DsvcRc

This was a great live for all the social nerds out here anxious about what’s going on w/ Twitter. Taylor and know the field; go follow them both to help you understand what’s coming next. (I’ve still got mixed feelings about ephemeral social, but watch for more!)

If ur hosting an event, outline covid safety precautions early, clearly, and stick to them. We are still in a pandemic, long covid continues to disable millions, and thousands are still dying (many old and vulnerable) You should care about protecting them

I would be happy if I never saw the sentence "these guidelines may change in response to evolving circumstances" ever again. it's the emptiest promise / another way to heighten anxieties for high-risk people who often need to plan ahead. also what are they waiting for lol...

& asking for proof of vaxx alone is meaningless when it comes to covid safety. Vaccinated ppl can and do spread covid. It's pure theater to act like checking vaxx status alone keeps us safe. Masks, ventilation, on-site testing, etc are all effective layers

yeah this doesn’t address anything and operates on early 2020 levels of assumptions about safety that seem childish in hindsight. All this says to me is that they prioritize comfort level over actual health and safety

Charging for a check mark suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of who truly benefits from it. It may be an ego boost to the entity with the mark. But it is a reassurance to those who read the tweets. If it is to be sold and bought, it no longer has the same credibility.
