  1. A min-width of 0 is a far better default for CSS Grid than auto in most situations. I think I am going to use minmax() 100% of the time when defining grid columns in future.

  2. It was thanks detailing the min-width behaviour in an earlier blog, that I was able to quickly understand what had changed and how to fix it. However it's sad that this is a breaking change and I cannot find release notes about it.

  3. So, got hit but a really interesting bug (fix) in Chrome version 80. I might write a full blog on it post later, for now I've made some notes in CodePen: If your grid layout breaks suddenly in Chrome 80, this could be why.

Not sure what commit message to write? In these situations recommend simply "merge changes" because then you can blame that set of weird uncategorised changes on a mythical merge operation.

Hey CSS and SVG nerds: Do you like colors? Do you like adjusting colors live in your code, with math? Do you want that to be much easier to do? Are you frustrated that all the proposals for color modifier functions haven't made it live? Read & discuss:

The moral of this story is I really like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I'm not sure I like all that other stuff we invented. :/

I knew it would deploy quickly but OMG, you probably have no idea how quickly a site built without NPM, or build processes, or a CSM can deploy in 2020! The answer is, faster than I can switch tabs and reload.

Again, this is not my point... I built this quickly with HTML, JavaScript and CSS. No static site generators, no build process of any kind, just HTML, JavaScript and CSS. I deployed it to Netlify with a drag and drop so I could share it with dad.

I'm refitting the interior, so naturally I built a website to help visualise and calculate the timber I need. It was invaluable, helped me catch design mistakes I wouldn't have seen on paper. Each time it redid calculations instantly, even fitting things optimally on the plywood.

I bought a camper van over the weekend. That's cool, but it's not the story I wanted to share....

I've also been lucky enough to work with Petch and I've learned that listening to her is a good idea. She has the best technical opinions with a healthy dose of pragmatism and good humour. You should listen to her too!

There are a bunch of speakers at this conference you might already know, but I bet a lot of you don't know (yet). She is hands down one of my favourite speakers anywhere in the world.

Australia is having so many phenomenal weather events we're exporting them to nearby countries.

Not kidding, all these are within weeks of each other and pretty close together. This is not in normal. Canberra is on fire again only days after a massive hail storm and Sydney is raining dust today.

Do I know any freelance developers (preferably in Sydney) who want to collab on some projects?

This sub-tweet is a little late, but if web components suck because it's hard to server render them, something sarcastic about how seamless and well thought out the SSR experience is with React.
