    There were several times on the project while debugging I had sent an email to all programmers subject “is this your memory?” with a handy screenshot of the debugger’s memory view, in case someone recognized this data that was in the wrong place. Sadly no one ever responded yes.

    There were a lot of memory corruption bugs when writing PS3 SPU code, because there was an async hardware memcpy unit and someone would always forget to wait on the copy finishing.

    Over the next few years I would learn a lot about how not to be an energetic know-it-all young C++ programmer that loved Boost and std::string. Forever grateful for the opportunity I was given to work on a unique game with some cool new friends.

    The early PS3 devkits were loud, as many people know. Only some people know that when you make a multiplayer game you need at least two devkits, which is more than twice as loud because your office gets hotter faster.

    After getting settled in for a bit I asked what game were we working on, and what was my role on the team, and the surprised looks on my coworkers was priceless.

    After finally finding some programmers that I was going to be working with we figured out that my "desk" was set up in a storage room because my actual office wasn't set up yet.

    I remember my first day of work pretty well. I got to work around 9am because I thought thats how jobs worked, and sat in someone's office for an hour because there were only a couple of people in the office and they had no idea where I was supposed to sit.

    As a pretty junior programmer in 2006 I helped bootstrap a bunch of game systems on top of a new engine. Got the first bits of UI on screen, added the first gun and shot the first bullet, and then did a ton of work on the net code before turning into a graphics+PS3 SPU wizard.

    10 years ago today I helped ship MAG. Because internally we called it "massive action game" and who could top that name :) It was an amazing feeling being the "one last thing" at the 2008 press conference. Sadly, the servers shut down years ago, RIP.

    I casually lurk on an OS dev discord and ... all the power to anyone that enjoys learning about that stuff but I'm surprised that the level of programming experience of the people doing hobby osdev (plus hanging in discord I suppose) is very low
