But also, even if every criminal were caught, they should still be able to vote, because prisoners are human beings and accordingly have rights

Because they're counted in the census and districts lines are drawn based upon their presence. There are districts in NY that have a half-dozen prisons filled with constituents -- mostly people of color -- who cannot vote. This is the very definition of a "rotten borough."

I'm also fine in general letting incarcerated people vote because they're subject to the laws of the country! They even pay taxes on their slave wages. It's the same reason non-citizens should get the vote too, because politicians affect their day-to-day living conditions

Fuck yeah, universal suffrage for all residing in the US and its territories!

Also, statehood or independence! No more empire!

For the simple reason that they have the right to representation just like everyone else, regardless of their incarceration status.

I was in a criminal gang in high school. We used to go out and look for hippies to cut their hair. I was in a gang fight where 14 boys went to the ER- 7 with knife wounds. I was a thief and a drug user. But I was white & never got caught.
-
I was a speed freak literally with my car but never got caught doing 110 mph with my gang. None of my gang ever got caught. We were all white. Fortunately for me I never saw them again after high school. I went into the USAF.
-
Congratulations on a great second act! I like to think that’s really the American dream...that we can mess up and redeem ourselves...and vote with all that wisdom to bear!!!
-
I didn't last in the USAF. When Sarge yelled harch right & I went left I new I was in trouble. I punched the squad leader one morning; Sarge was not pleased; but when I finally made it out of bootcamp he gave me a smile.
-
I made it out of boot camp but I got a Conscientious Objector discharge (stamped on the back "for the good of the government") in 1973. I had talked my Com. Of.'s son (he was in my squad) into putting in for a CO. They let me go without jailing me.
-
There were 30 trainees in my tech school class. I was trained as a medic. My roommate was Black, there was one Hispanic fellow. When we got our assignments (this was late in the Vietnam warcrime, 1970) my roommate & the Hispanic went to Vietnam, none of the whites.

What I did during the Vietnam warcrime that made me a Conscientious Objector.https://wordpress4772.wordpress.com/2016/03/30/johns-hopkins-1970-1974/ …

My Son was a Prison Guard for 10 years until he quit due to the recognition he was a part of the MIC & it's ties to Government corruption. What happens when the they are told to vote a certain way or else? I say this not because I'm opposed. Just aware of the depth of corruption.
-
I'm not opposed. On the flipside, as a Mother of a former guard, what happens when you inject politics into an already highly emotionally charged environment? Just being on Twitter should answer that question. I'm being facetious..sort of...lol. Out own votes don't count...
-
consider that politics don't get "injected" to anything: they are eternal and omnipresent existence is political
-
True. Already in existence in Prison as a Hierarchy in the form of gangs, etc as my Son can attest to. They have thier own little Govt. as do the guards. Nothing could go wrong in that compressed environment right? Not opposed but there's work to do in Prison Industrial Complex.
-
consider: abolishing prisons even if one does not reach that goal, undertaking the work to move in that direction would be a tremendous improvement, as it would require treating criminals as part of society, rather than permanent exiles from it
-
I'm totally on board with that. My son quit due to the abuse and negligence of Prisoners. Also, the abuse and negligence of guards. Not to mention, some of the guards needed to be put away.
