Won the meet, but sacrificed his dignity? What kind of life lesson is that?
How is forcing the issue by starting the injury clock a "great life lesson" for this kid? Or forcing him to choose between disappointing his team and sacrificing his identity?
My eyes tear up every time I see this...I can’t even believe it happened. Why didn’t his coaches protest? I would have gotten myself thrown out of there before I would let a kid I coach be bullied by a racist.
Its against the rules to have long hair... if he was white and had to cut it would this be on twitter? Nope
It's against the rules to cut his hair at the mat. The hair passed approval at the weigh-in, skin and nails check, and before he got to the mat.
His teammates gave NOFux
The behavior of this ref has a long history. Emasculating a man in this way is known to a lot of people. The coaches shld be sued. Ths was an assault & a violation of this young man's human agency. No team victory is worth the damage 2ths young man's psyche. This can't be undone.
I hope this young man finds a team and teammates that will not ever allowed this to happen again! People who love him should see to it that he doesn't wrestle with this team again. I ache for him. My heart is broken for him. When will we learn that winning at any cost is a loss?
This is the most degrading thing I've seen in my life

omg I felt this deep in my soul
The optics are horrible. Noone stood up or with this young man. I am angry and outraged. As a human being and parent, I remain hurt and livid.
That is actually painful to watch
No. It’s the epitome of child abuse.
None of you understand folk style wrestling and strict regulations involved. There is strict hair, nail, and skin guidelines to follow for the safety of all parties. I agree it was a rediculous decision to make him cut his hair, but this by NO MEANS was racism! His hair=too long
He’s wrestled with that hair the whole time though
This purported referee dehumanized a young man participating in an athletic event. In front of his peers. He will never forget it.
Nor will we! And shame on every single adult in that room for allowing this to happen!
He had a cap... tried to wear a non approved cap for the match... that's when ref gave this ultimatum... should have been forced to get correct cap or forfeit... not cut... extreme. - Former Wrestler Mom
