Ross is a horrible drunk. No one is surprised when he T-bones a minivan, killing a 16-year-old. Everyone is surprised when the mother doesn't press charges. But they didn't see the notebooks she'd found under her son's bed earlier that day. They don't know what he was planning.

Read the book first, then saw it. Yes similar vein with her reckoning occuring after her son does what he does. This scenario you've written though has a couple of unique turns that would play out beautifully if visualized. What to do with the kid's notebooks? What happens now?
