She opens the back door to let the breeze in and hears something moving in the night. She steps out on the patio, illuminated by a single overhead floodlight in the inky country dark. She tosses a stone, it hits the shadow at the edge of the circle of light, and bounces off it.

A frightened black bear retreats, her shoulder stinging. Why did the thing in the light bite her? She only smelled something delicious and was hoping for food. Raccoon had told her about this thing called "pie" he'd found in the shiny stump nearby. Nothing about sting-rocks. Ow!
