***About once a week I try to end one of these stories with, "Eventually it begins to get dark." And then I remember that's a line from @neilhimself 's "The Sandman: Endless Nights." Which is too bad, because it works as a closer for practically every piece of microfiction.***

It sounds like a line from an Infocom game, like when you give the command scream, and it says "You begin to get a sore throat." "It begins to get dark. It is dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."
