One day, an egg the size of a jetliner appeared over Manhattan, indefinitely suspended in midair. People were terrified. Then nervous. Then amused. Then they got over it. Eventually people said things like, "Can you believe there are adults now who can't remember before the egg?"

This is basically Childhood’s End, except there’s more than one of them and there are aliens inside them

I don’t know that one. I was reaching for something about how we turn trauma into barriers in time and resent people on the other side of those barriers. But I thought it’d be easier to take if I invented a magical realist event instead of name-checking a real catastrophe.

I understood that. That’s sorta what happens in the book too. The aliens come to Earth but won’t show themselves for 50 years because they know their appearance would scare humans. So they wait until almost all humans have lived their whole lives with them present, then come out.

Neat. I'll have to add it to the "to read" pile.
