***SERIOUS question: What's the etiquette on asking to pet an emotional support animal? I know that with say, seeing-eye dogs, it's rude to ask because it interferes with the dog's work. Are ESAs similar? Because when I see one, I feel a DEEP need for emotional support of my own.

While teaching in college, I had ex-vets who took my class & brought in ESAs. When a student asked if she could pet his dog, one vet replied, "You need emotional support, get your own dog." It's a very personal thing with many of them. I would refrain unless you know the person.
