***SERIOUS question: What's the etiquette on asking to pet an emotional support animal? I know that with say, seeing-eye dogs, it's rude to ask because it interferes with the dog's work. Are ESAs similar? Because when I see one, I feel a DEEP need for emotional support of my own.

***Important Context: There's a person who works in my building who comes to work around the same time I do each day escorted by a VERY snorglable pup in an ESA harness. So there's no confusion about the dog's role, only whether I can ask this stranger if I can pet her dog.

Keep us informed on weather you ask or do something! I'd love to hear the conclusion of this!

After reading through the different perspectives here, I'm inclined to leave this woman be. I might feel differently if I had a non-dog related reason to interact with her, but I don't.

Hi! My dad has an ESA😊 It’s usually ok to say “hi, you have a beautiful dog. Is she working right now?” If they say yes, its prob not a good time for pettings. But folks w/ ESAs can usually tell who’s a dog lover & may offer! Even if they don’t, your respect will be appreciated

I think, given that you see them often, it would be okay to ask as long as you respect the reply and also don't expect to have a daily cuddle?

Never hurts to ask. What's the worst that can happen? (my go-to place, when I'm not sure if I should do something). The "owner" might say No, and you can release yourself from the nagging curiosity, and live happily ever after. :~)

Personally I'd go with: Hi... your dog is so adorable! Would it be okay with you if I made physical contact/pet/touched it?

Just compliment her on her dog, and say, “I bet a lot of folks ask to pet your dog,” and see what her response is.

If she’s a stranger and the dog is in a harness, I’d say just greet them and move on. It may look like a cuddle bug, but it’s still working. (Just my two cents tho!)

the etiquette is in the asking: asking is fine. It's the folk who just automatically pet the animal that tend to be the issue. Also, for the most part, ESA's, unlike 'seeing' or 'hearing' dogs aren't trained, so you don't know how the animal is likely to react - so poss problem.

ESAs generally don’t have any specialized training but definitely still ask to pet them 🙂
