Driving many artists, writers and musicians is the awareness that something isn't right. Why are things this way? What would make it better? These questions provoke creativity. Very often, there is personal, deeply felt pain at the heart of it.

It can be that way. But there are other paths. I often see people bemoan that they haven't had enough "experience" to make something worthwhile. And that's a cop-out. You don't need personal trauma to fuel art. You need empathy and a good ear.

Conversely, sacrificing (perhaps permanently) the focus needed to make art in exchange for...not having to pay attention to the present.
