Jennie got a box in the mail. It held a pin that said “FAN FAVORITE.” No explanation. She liked the design, so she put it on her jacket. People began to defer to her. She got whisked to the front of every line. She was curious about the truth, but she liked the attention more.

  2. “Let me give you something before you go. It’s a particular gray, the shade of a cloud’s outline in the East, just as the sun begins to set in the West. It’s the exact color of rest. And it reminds me of you, because it’s calm and unpretentious, and because I’ve always loved it.”

  3. When a meeting was winding down, everyone looked away from One-More-Thing Bill. Silently, they all prayed that by gazing at nothing they could summon a void to suck the air from his lungs before he could utter the words: “I know it’s not on the agenda, but I have a few thoughts.”

  4. There’s a whirl of ramps wherever three highways meet. Running through them is a road that doesn't seem to connect to anything. You study it as you drive by, certain that road could take you anywhere if you could only get on it. You can‘t slow down long enough to figure it out.

She followed her star to where land met water. Then she built a ship, to sail to where the sea ran off the world’s edge. Then she gave her ship wings, to fly beyond the known, the suspected, and the imagined. Then her star wasn’t a destination, but a figurehead to point the way.

Every bird knows there’s more than one sky. The higher you go, the stronger the wind. Most birds never fly high enough to find their limit. So if you see one fall broken from the sky, chances are it used to be a person whose fondest wish came true. But wings don't grant wisdom.

He is cutting strips of duct tape for a treehouse. The blade slips and digs into his thumb. He is helping to make dinner, cutting up avocados. The blade slips and digs into his thumb. All these years later, he remembers it both ways, feels both cuts. But he only has one scar.

”What’ve you been up to?” ”I was at a mime conference.” “Was it fun?” ”There’s a lot of networking with other mimes.” ”How do mimes...?” ”It’s mostly object work that turns into planting business cards.” ”Sounds hard.” “Afterward, I just wanted to sit and not-not talk to anyone.”

“Have you ever traveled by eagle? It’s terrible. They don’t know how to hold anything gently. You feel like an in-flight-meal the entire time. And they’re so easily distracted. All it takes is a plump rabbit a 1,000 leagues away, and you’re off course. So yes, we needed to walk.”

After Carlos returned from space, he could levitate small objects. He talked to them in his mind, convinced them to want to float. So they did. He never told other astronauts about it. He got addicted to wonder up there. Now this secret was the only thing that scratched the itch.

Like all exercise, it is a little painful. Each day, Wade says hello, asks how they’re doing, listens, internalizes, responds, smiles. He is careful to watch his form. Each night he goes home sore in new places. He promises himself he’ll do a better job of stretching next time.

*** I can tell how well a story is going to do within 3 minutes of posting it. Whenever a story bombs, I'll spend those minutes anxiously refreshing Twitter and telling myself 'People like it. Twitter's just slow.' 2,700+ stories in, I'm still nervous every time.

"Nothing can stop us! We'll take over everything!" "Why?" "I don't follow you." "We're already doing well. Maybe rapid expansion isn't a good idea in the long term. What if this backfires?" "Get out." *** "That's a nasty cough. I'm writing you a prescription for antibiotics."

Sometimes she would tell him the embassy had intervened on his behalf. They’d made a deal for his release. He got to shower, eat, even go outside. Then it would begin again. Years later, he’s still waiting for her to suddenly appear and laugh at him for believing it was over.

In shame, he went to drown in the sea. But not even the water wanted him. He jumped into a volcano. But not even the fire wanted him. He leapt from a mountain’s peak. But not even the earth wanted him. He floated, waiting for air’s rejection. It never came. He floats there still.

"Welcome back. Here are your notes." "Notes?" "On your life. Read them quickly. We're going again soon." "We're doing my life again?" "We're doing everything again. I wish people remembered this part of the cycle." "How many times are we going to do it?" "Until we get it right."

Aiden secretly stockpiled gold bars, hiding them behind the walls of his house. Then he died in a fire after smoking in bed. As he burned, the gold melted and was coated in a thick layer of ash. The remains of the house were bulldozed into a heap and sent to the dump uninspected.

Graham was the type who got tickets early, bought all the merchandise, and went to the conventions. The movies were just OK, though. More than anything else, he just liked being a fan. But until those little fingers squeezed his thumb, he had no idea what that word really meant.

Agatha raved about the world’s end. Most passers-by thought she was worried about some upcoming apocalypse. A few thought she was talking about a place. But Agatha didn't concern herself with when or where. She only worried about why— whether the world’s end justified its means.

Beneath the cathedral is a crypt, and below that, a secret chapel to something darker. That chapel has a hidden passage leading downward. And so on. Each level is sure they are the deepest, and that the cathedral knows nothing of what they do. But the cathedral is always digging.
