A writer I know once said this about parenting, but it applies to freelancing/writing - we're all on the same escalator, just on different steps along the way. If you're starting out, find ppl on different steps who'll help you. If you've been around, be a helper. #FreelanceChat

BREAKING: White House issues new policy that will require, by 2026, all federally-funded research results to be freely available to public without delay, ending longstanding ability of journals to paywall results for up to 1 year. Coverage coming on @ScienceInsider.

As Biden cancels (some) student debt, remember why the debt exists. A key Reagan advisor warned in 1970 that free college was producing the dangerously explosive "dynamite" of an "educated proletariat," and "we have to be selective on who we allow to go through higher education":

It took 11 years working as a staff reporter and freelancer to pay back my student loans. That and medical debt meant that throughout my 20s, $$ was a constant worry. I'm so happy for today's 20somethings who won't have to worry as much because of #studentloanforgiveness

In keeping with my campaign promise, my Administration is announcing a plan to give working and middle class families breathing room as they prepare to resume federal student loan payments in January 2023. I'll have more details this afternoon.
The Biden Administration's Student Loan Debt Plan:

Forgiving debt:
$20,000 if you went to college on Pell Grants
$10,000 if you didn't receive Pell Grants

Forgiveness only applies to those earling less than $125,000

Student loan pause extended one final time through Dec 31, 2022

Payment based on income:
If you have undergraduate loans, you can cap repayment at 5% of your monthly income.

They tried so hard with putting a name to Quiet Quitting 🤣. The very concept of people setting boundaries and not putting up with wage theft anymore is SO terrifying to the American employer that they had to put a marketing team behind it.

Hi, @mikiebarb: I’m glad the NYT finally took notice of the strike, but it’s not fair to erase my months of work—which includes multiple articles, videos, threads, interviews, and a mini-documentary series with @TheRealNews—just because I’m a working class freelance journalist. twitter.com/KalinaNewman/s…

This expose on CEO who got famous for raising salaries at his co to minimum $70K is a great lesson for journalists. If you're profiling somebody, do your homework. It's not enough to scan 1st page of search results because ppl use social media to hid bad press. #writingtips

Dan Price was called "the one moral CEO in America." He spoke about corporate greed and raising the pay of employees. The attention enabled a pattern of abuse in his personal life and hostile behavior at work, a New York Times investigation found.

Interesting article in light of piece on worker surveillance apps I pointed to earlier. Are companies that use time trackers taking job churn & the time it takes to onboard new hires into account when dinging people for not being productive enough? #productivity #HR

They've been doing this for a long time, even under their previous Elance brand, where I called them out on it way back in 2010. It's about time the media catches up. The tools change a bit over time, but Upwork's complicity doesn't. allfreelancewriting.com/another-freela

Companies are using surveillance apps to track worker productivity, and #Freelancers aren't immune. - the popular freelance marketplace - has a built-in time tracker app that orgs use to track independent contractors. #work #HR #productivity
