Been thinking lately about how this would play out today if the paper were posted as a first. My guess is it would have been shredded by the scientific community within days. One thing is for sure: it wouldn't have made into any journal lending it general credence.

So no, I really don’t believe there’s any tension between “access” and “reliability”, and fueling this view seems disingenuous. We’re in a much better position to develop robust vetting processes if we make outputs (+ their code, data, method dependencies) openly available. 5/

Her children, her grandchildren, and her many great-grandchildren should carry it with them as a reminder of the frailty of life, the privilege of freedom, and the unbounded goodness of human beings.

Sanz Briz has been called "The Angel of Budapest" - just one of many individuals who risked their lives to save the lives of others. I'm so humbled to know this story and only wish my grandmother could have.

My grandfather, István Bauer, and grandmother, Irén Bauer, were #90 and 91 on the list.

The document found in my grandmother's home was signed by Sanz Briz, a forgery due its false claim that my grandfather and his wife were Sephardic Jews. Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, verified its authenticity and also sent me a copy of Briz's typewritten list.

In fact, only a minority of the 5200 people saved by Sanz Briz were Sephardic Jews.

He issued thousands of protection letters to the Jews of Budapest, claiming that the recipients, who were supposedly of Sephardic origin and thus possessed Spanish nationality, were protected under Spanish law.

During his time in Budapest, Sanz Briz set up several safe houses, which were under the official protection of Spain.

When Ángel Sanz Briz, Spanish diplomat under Franco, visited Budapest in 1942 and witnessed for himself the discrimination against and systematic deportation of Hungarian Jews, he decided to leverage his diplomatic privileges to help.

We knew some parts of the story already -- namely, that my grandfather had somehow obtained "protection" from the Nazis from the Spanish government -- but we never really understood how; nor, apparently, did my grandmother know the extent of it.

When my grandmother passed away in 2014, my mother discovered in her Jerusalem home a document that we had never laid eyes on. After a lot of Googling and several correspondences with Holocaust museums, I determined its origin.
