In 3 weeks I shaved almost a minute off my time while running over 4x the distance 🤯
Part of it is from cross training and resting but the majority is mindset
• Slow down
• Be present
• Let go of the outcome
• Enjoy the journey
A great mindset for other areas of life

I looked at this list and asked myself if an employer offered all of these
(including true unlimited vacation),
would I go back to working for someone else?
My answer surprised me
It’s no
It would take having full autonomy on what I worked on + not having to report to anyone

You can only have one. How would these rank from
to
?
• 30% raise
• fully remote
• no meetings
• unlimited PTO
• access to a VA
• 4-day workweek

When I saw people running in -20C I’d think
I wished I loved a physical activity so much I’d do it in -20C
A pattern that’s emerging from my interviews with ultramarathoners:
Being curious about what their body can do
To love exercise for the sake of it, follow your curiosity

I’ve never heard of the Streisand Effect before. Corporate lawyers have all the tricks up their sleeves
Fascinating story. Someone could make an unending movie about how the ending of Mindcraft became public domain
Quote Tweet
Hmmm. I just had a bizarre experience, involving a global news organisation and a trillion dollar corporation. (I got caught in the middle, so... owch.)
It’s not the sort of experience the people involved usually talk about in public… so I think I’ll talk about it in public.

I suck at storytelling.
For the past 2 months I've been studying @thatroblennon and @GrammarHippy and became clear:
The key to great writing isn't in what they say, but in what they don't say.
I’ve reversed-engineered their thinking process so you don’t have to

I listened because of the great storytelling.
This year I’d like to focus more time on value and less on production
Here’s the link to the episode if you’re interested

I struggle with high value, low production quality
I know of many examples where this approach leads to success
Today I listened to
“If you don’t enjoy the journey you won’t like the destination”
Someone is brushing their teeth in the background [4:10]. I kept listening

I’m doing speed training for the first time
I’m supposed to run hard enough for 5 minutes that it feels unsustainable but not so hard I can’t do it
Sounds a lot like launching a workshop 😝

Don’t let this be your 2023
• Reflect on patterns in challenges
Until you learn from your mistakes, you’ll keep repeating them
• Be prepared
Many mistakes are avoidable
• Be kind to yourself
Energy spent beating yourself up is energy taken away from moving forward
Tired of struggling?
Our brains naturally gravitate to what’s wrong
Shift your thinking
Spend time visualizing all the ways it looks to thrive
When you find yourself stuck on what’s wrong, shift your thinking to the way to thrive that resonates most

When thinking about how what you’d like out of 2023, ask:
What are all the things that can get in the way?
Ex:
With running a marathon my biggest risk is injury. I got a gait assessment and consultation
Now I know what tweaks will help

Strongly disagree with this
Everyone is on their own journey
Sometimes it takes a few years (or decades) of trying before adopting a healthy habit
Go ahead and embrace new year, new you

You may have had a better 2022 than you thought
One way to show yourself some love
Write down every single one of your wins big and small starting from last January
I bet you’ll be surprised at how good your year was even if most of the time you felt you were struggling

The 1st day of training is a rest day 😁
This marathon training plan is based on time instead of distance which I think will be more encouraging mentally
With every decision I’m looking to set myself up for success which I’m defining as completing the race before it shuts down

3. Learning about pacing
What also helped on his first 13km run was having someone with him who ran at a comfortable pace
I didn’t have someone to pace me so I ran at a pace where I felt comfortable and focused on a podcast
I was slow, but didn’t care

2. Letting go of the outcome
In my interview with what helped him run 13km his first run was just running, not knowing where he was going to go and for how long
I tried it, and it worked! I could also run 13km without training (I don’t recommend this)
Quote Tweet
Inspired by an interview I did with an ultramarathoner today I ran 13km
Tips that worked for me:
• Don’t think about the outcome
• Don’t think about where you’re going
• Go at an easy pace you can sustain
It was a gorgeous run
(my tracking stopped for some reason)

1. Taming my inner critic
Spent Nov experimenting w this intently
What worked?
Having a bag of tricks:
• Telling inner critic “not today”
• Advance prep to do the thing
• Pausing during and after to feel how good feels
• Recalling those feelings at the moment of decision

Interviewed an ultramarathoner. He went from never running to wanting to run an ultra 🤯
When he reached out to an ultramarathoner to learn more, the guy said,
Let's meet on Sunday. Bring your shoes
He ended up running 13K his very 1st run 🤯🤯🤯
How?
It's all about pacing

Officially car-less!
I wanted to see what it's like to live in a walkable community with good public transit. We've been downtown for over a year and have driven less than 2000 km
Decided to sell our car in this crazy used car seller's market
Anyone use Evo/Turo? Any cons?

A buddy suddenly announced he wanted to speak fluent Italian.
“How long do you think that will take?” I asked
Him: "5 years"
Me: "Gee, sounds like a long time"
Him: "5 years are going to go by whether I am learning a new language or not."
That's stayed with me ever since.

Sparkles are going to be everywhere
Luxury brands were sparkly last year. I see it showing up in mainstream brands this year.
Next is DIY sparkles with the next version of Bedazzle coming but with smaller crystals
I also see it crossing gender lines
