Film: Leto, The Humorist. TV: Deutschland 89, Londongrad. Books: Dressed Up for a Riot, Ground Up. Can’t find my harborcoat. Work Qs: Rob Kenneally at CAA
The "Next On Mad Men" previews that told you nothing about the plot and that felt like 10 second abstract tone poems were some of the funniest TV the '00s had to offer.
i love how vague the mad men episode descriptors on prime are. they’re all like ‘peggy has a problem. roger meets a client. don gets a reminder of his past’ yes babe that’s all of them
With 3 acting wins, plus Best Director and Best Picture, EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE has won more above-the-line Oscars than any movie ever in the 95 years they’ve thrown this show.
EEAAO winning every Oscar would be ideal for me, because I liked it just enough not to care either way. TÁR, on the other hand, I love so much I perversely want it to lose everything (so I can start unselfconsciously putting it in my all-time top 10 lists)
In honor of Anton Yelchin, who was born on this date in 1989, we recommend watching 'Green Room' (currently streaming on HBO Max) and following along with this list of things we learned from Jeremy Saulnier’s director's commentary: https://bit.ly/3mInsWy
There are people in Russia who oppose Putin as an agent of international Jewry standing in the way of a white utopia. Should Ukraine accept their help? Why the hell not! It’s Russia’s job to marginalize these idiots later, not theirs. (This, I dare add, was once Navalny’s MO too)
The only real metric is how many Nazis sit in government and how closely does the country’s policy hew to their cause. In Russia’s case, quite. In Ukraine’s, not at all. But clutching one’s pearls at a fighter’s tattoos (“See?!! They’re all like that!”) is naive or disingenuous.
The thing about Nazis is that they like killing people; ideology is secondary to that. That’s why there will be Nazis fighting on every side of every conflict. It’s time to accept it and stop acting confused about Azov, Wagner, the weirdo Russian guerillas in Bryansk, et al.
My own path would be Surkov (or any other Kremlin asshole I met in Moscow) — Vyacheslav Nikonov (Molotov’s grandson) — Molotov — Ribbentrop (duh) — Hitler
How many handshakes does it take for you to get to Hitler? I think my shortest path is:
0. Me
1. João Derly
2. Lula
3. Queen Elizabeth II
4. King George VI
5. Neville Chamberlain
6. Adolf Hitler
I really don’t get the insistence on viewing #TheLastOfUs strictly as an adaptation. So its has a source in another medium — what doesn’t these days? I always thought that once a story jumps media, it becomes its own thing. Snowpiercer was a comic; no one checked it for fidelity
Power cut out in the entire neighborhood as I was half-watching M3GAN, so for the next few hours we had to eat apples, read books and sing songs by candlelight, LIKE ANIMALS #LABlizzard
Went to it last night. Damn. The scene in the bamboo forest is still one of my favorite in all of film history. Just every single aspect of the art firing on all cylinders
There’s no big mystery. The part of the LA diaspora that’s siding with Putin now is the exact same part that organized a Facebook drive to bake *pies for cops* during 2020 BLM protests
Putin’s war in Ukraine has splintered the Soviet diaspora - my op-ed in today’s @latimes: https://latimes.com/opinion/story/2023-02-19/ukraine-russia-war-one-year-diaspora-community…#UkraineWar
The main Russian trade publication, Exhibitor’s Bulletin, decided not to participate in this charade and started straight up listing grosses from 7 of these titles as Avatar box office
How Russian movie theaters skirt sanctions: they show pirated DCP copies intended for Kazakhstan (which have Russian dubbing), listed as “bonus features” with random local titles. Below, a film student rejoices that her shorts are showing as a cover for Avatar: The Way of Water
