Do we know for sure this is the first year Iowa DNC tried to use the app? First Google hit for "'Iowa' 'caucus' 'apk'" brings me to a download link for a... 2016 caucus reporting app? I don't know that it's legit, but there are screenshots available at

My favorite, geeky moment from the impeachment trial Friday: Former Sen. , now with MSNBC, gets an on-air tip via SMS from a sitting senator. To suss out the source, asks if the smiley it contained was an ASCII emoticon (“:-)”) or a Unicode emoji (“😃”)

It's 2020. May I safely assume that tech companies who state in job listings resumes must be FAXED to them are not serious about seeking candidates, but merely satisfying regulatory requirements for sponsoring H1B visas? Is there another plausible explanation I'm overlooking?

I'm 99% sure GOP Congressman Lee Zeldin just said "It's a total Schiff show" during the impeachment proceedings, presumably making a crude wordplay joke with Congressman Adam Schiff's last name. But that's not what the closed captioning person apparently heard.

It kills me when I receive documents from a public records request and it includes emails from very serious people, about very serious topics, written in very not-serious fonts. At first blush I thought it was Comic Sans, but on closer examination maybe not? Anyone recognize it?

I'm still left with so many questions. What was the man originally trying to build? What went out of control? What would Dr. Peter Venkman do?

You can listen to the call here. I've redacted the exact street address:

It turns out, no. The caller immediately requested the Emergency Radiological Response Center. "Basically, I invented a device, and it's kind of acting as a particle accelerator, I guess...it's emitting superluminous light and alpha particles."

According to The Columbus Dispatch, a nuclear specialist (!) was called in and determined the device was actually a homemade electric capacitor. This left me with so many questions. Did the 911 operator just misinterpret the caller, or overreact to something he said?

I was fascinated by a story last Thursday about an Ohio cul-de-sac that was evacuated after a 911 call reported a possible homemade nuclear reactor had... perhaps gone out of control? So I did a public records request for the 911 call. 1/

Security guards for one of Oakland's new luxury apartment buildings just detained, and drew a gun on, a passing black Oaklander. He drew suspicion while photographing bike racks. He is chair of the Oakland Bicyclists and Pedestrian Advisory Commission.

I have a Google Alert setup for the phrase "Brown Act." It goes off just about *every single day*. Here's a great story from yesterday, by : "CNPA counsel: Nevada City consultant’s Brown Act interpretation ‘exact opposite of law’"

Ah, yes, a cordial invitation... also known as the Brown Act :-) In the future, I'm going to mentally replace all references to "Brown Act" with "cordial invitation." I expect it will lower my blood pressure.

Of the approximately 180 nurses in the ER, 43 are bilingual, but only 4 are officially sanctioned to speak a second language. Meanwhile, according to hospital data, only 61% of patients speak English.
