1. Reading the 2018 NDS while a war is being lost is an interesting exercise. One thing I notice right off the bat is the weird idea that the US military has to be more "lethal." I have no idea what that means.

6. Dare I ask what the metric would be for increased lethality?

7. Honestly, it's nonsense. By why is there anything nonsensical in a document as important as the NDS, which I'm sure was the work of many hands? And yet everyone was ok with nonsense?

In *CENTCOM* it's been insufficient, under particular circumstances. The NDS describes future fights, against peer competitors. There's a better argument that lethality applies to that postulated set of circumstances

If so that's a tactical problem, not a strategic one.

It's a tale as old as time: you don't get promotions by asking uncomfortable questions. And you only unclog the promotion pipeline by being willing to sack underperforming commanders. Which, in and of itself, requires a public admission that they are failing in their mission.

The path forward is increased communication between the legislature and officers. No more Colin Powell being mute when he knows the Iraq war can't be justified. Congress needs to be able to know where the expenditures of blood, treasure and national reputation are leading us.

Is "killing people and breaking things" what the military should be for? Does the military recognize when it is not the correct tool for the job? Or does the military happily try to convince political leaders, that political problems can and should be solved with force?
