      There are varying standards of what constitutes welcoming people, though. Imagine a hierarchy starting with You are allowed to enter the church and attend services. People will greet you and introduce themselves when they see you. You will be allowed to join if you ask. 1/5

      Proceeding through: You will be asked to join. People will invite you to small group functions (Sunday School, UMW, UMM) Proceeding further through You will be suggested for positions on committees You will be suggested for leadership positions. 2/5

      All the way up to You can train for and be given a position as a pastor in a church of that denomination. I’m leaving out parts of the hierarchy and organizing it differently from the way others might, but you get the idea. 3/5

      Some people will consider that they have welcomed you if they allow you in the door. Others consider welcome to require actions further up the hierarchy. Some when they say “welcome” mean if your gifts and inclinations carry you to the top of the hierarchy, you should be 4/5

      Welcome there, or else you are not really welcome in that church. So that’s how there can be a battle over whether any group of people is really welcome. 5/5

          I didn’t mean that there was a formal hierarchy. I meant that if you look at how people behave toward one another, you can sort out hierarchies, and that is true in any group environment.
