And it's the same complaints "Blah blah lazy kids..." "Blah blah no respect..." "Blah blah source of all our problems..." Just like their parents did to them. Because THEIR parents did it. It's hard wired into our DNA. 2/18

And when you are on the receiving end it sucks. Because goddamn it, you didn't create this fucking world! They did! But they blame you! So you start to push back. Slowly. Maybe a bit timidly at first, but your confidence builds as you find your voice. 3/18

Soon you start to see the answers. The ones that older generation ignored, or were too fucking stupid to see. And then, fuck them! YOU are in the driver's seat! YOU have the solutions! YOU understand! This is YOUR world now. That older generation can get out of the way. 4/18

It is your world. And you know everything. Just like the older generation did at that age. And the generation before that. By then, you are sick to death of their voice. So you move onward without them. You leave them behind. You get jobs. You get a family. 5/18

You look at that older generation as something you deal with. They are around, they're a pain in the ass, but they don't have any bite left. All bark. So your generation takes the wheel, and they're going to put this thing back on track. And you start to make it happen. 6/18

Things don't work out the way you wanted them to. But you're flexible. You can still adjust. And the children of that older begin to have children of their own. Because maybe you won't be able to make that world you imagined, but you can pass it along to them. 7/18

Of course you'll have to teach them. They have to know what you know if they are going to make that better world. So you love them. Dear God, how you love them. Even as you are teaching them not to shit on themselves, how to walk, don't put that in your mouth... 8/18

Then it's off to school, and do you have homework and no, it's a school night, no you can't watch that movie, NO,BECAUSE I SAID SO, THAT'S WHY! You begin to hear it coming out of your mouth. The voice of that older generation. The things you hated. And you are appalled. 9/18

You try to adjust, if you still can. You aren't as flexible as you used to be. And frankly you could use a bit of help. That older generation...they've been through this, right? Maybe a few questions will help. He'll, even if you use them as negative examples. Right? 10/18

Because the world has become difficult and complicated. So many things aren't going the way they were supposed to. And that younger generation doesn't help. I mean you tried to pass on your vision, but they just won't listen. They're lazy. And respect? None. 11/18

You watch them pull away. Sure, they have to, but you weren't really ready for it. There's so much you wanted to teach them. Not so much about that vision, but just survival. Because you love them. You want them to make it. But maybe you can cram in a few more.... 12/18

They don't want to hear it. You don't know anything about them. You're out of touch. Anything you have to say is from the past. This is their world now. They are in the driver's seat. And they are turning straight into a wall. You are yelling "Look out!" but they're gone. 13/18

In the silence that's left, you start to look back and see all of the wrong turns you took. That's when you begin to realize how little you know. How little you've always known. Doesn't it figure? Now, when you have nothing to do with it, you gain wisdom. 14/18

If you are lucky, and you allow it to happen, you can also see just how funny all of it is. So here we are. "Okay, boomer" is on the timeline. It's the product of idealism. A necessary parting of ways. And it is no different than the idealism of the ones who came before. 15/18

As I said, I pretend this will make a difference. That it will be heard. But I know it won't. Because I wouldn't have heard it. We are just playing out the life cycle. Hardwired into our DNA and reflected in everything we do and see. And what we don't see. 16/18

So take what you want. Throw out that dismissive "Okay, boomer". Sure it stings. It doesn't kill anyone. If that's what you need, go for it. But take this as well.... 17/18

Apology accepted. Tuck it away. And when the time comes for you to look back and really see the inherent hubris of youth, know that all is forgiven. Because deep down we still love you. We have to. You are us. 18/18
