The juxtaposition of this and the Iowa caucus debacle is quite jarring.

China built a hospital in 10 days to treat coronavirus patients. With motivation and leadership, we could be building many more things like that.

Some interesting speculation on forms of government in the spacefaring era.

Well, it kinda does. "He will prioritize new transportation funding for areas that have undertaken progressive zoning reform ...".

I continue to take the view that there are really two things that need to be done: relax zoning and improve transportation infrastructure to make larger areas of cities economically productive. Unfortunately, this plan does not address either.

I have tremendous respect for Scott Wiener and his efforts on , even if I don't agree with all of this session's changes. If there were just a few more people in CA government who are actually trying to solve problems, the state would be in a much better position.

I think it is an especially good time for someone who wants to get creative about solutions.

Rent control causes construction to halt and rents to go up for everyone trying to move in. The evidence for this is overwhelming. Maybe rent control is best understood as a form of nativism.

Good review by on the potential of tree planting for negative emissions. Key questions: - How much land is there that can feasibly be (re)forested? - How permanent are trees as carbon storage?

This is a major and welcome advance. Finland and Sweden have relatively clean power grids if H2 is to be produced via electrolysis.

    3) Alt meat is cheaper and superior to animal meat in every way, causing the existing meat industries to collapse. I consider this the most optimistic scenario, but decades off at least is my guess. This scenario should also account for supply chain and cultural inertia.

    2) Alt meat becomes a big thing, but augments rather than replaces the current meat supply. This is what has happened with aquaculture and wild fisheries so far. This may be most likely if growing demand for meat overwhelms available land for feed and pasture.

I like the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat burger, but again I see them as marginal improvements over earlier veggie burgers, not anything fundamentally different.

Three scenarios for the future of meat substitutes: e.g. soy products, plant-based alternatives, or lab-grown. 1) They remain niche products. This is possible. I've been a vegetarian since 2008 and regard the traditional veggie burger as "good enough' for my purposes.

Mercedes cutting EV sales due to battery cell shortage. Supply chain issues can be resolved, but it takes time and slows change in manufacturing sectors. It also make's Tesla's strategy of vertical integration look smart.

There have been plenty of comments on this already, so I will just point out that 500 years ago, most people had worse air quality, worse water quality, worse diets, and more exposure to disease than most people today.
