The fires are creating their own towering cumulus clouds, heating the upper atmosphere & creating an "instability" that takes the form of an atmospheric wave disturbance (a "gravity wave"). In other words, the fires are influencing weather not just locally but over a large scale.

Rewrite? Aren’t gravity waves common tho uncommonly visible? What sets this apart as new?
-
The phenomenon itself isn’t unique. But the intensity of these pyrocumulus (and the degree of instability and amplitude of resulting gravity waves) is at least in my experience unmatched. I haven’t seen an image like this before.

A friend down the south coast has ash rain... and our local fireground has flared up again today in the Blue Mountains. 42 top temperature today here, with 46 in Penrith/Richmond. This IS the new normal, the bell curve has shifted...
-
As Dr. Mann has pointed out elsewhere, we can't really call it "the new normal" as that implies that things are stabilizing as they are. Things are still accelerating and transforming. The best we can say is that the world won't go back to how we knew it before.

How are ghg-emissions affected by rapid oxidation over a large area? When flames abate, how long before the region's plants and trees can sequester carbon at the same rate as pre-conflagration? Is conflagration an amplification effect? Are there others?https://twitter.com/weatherdak/status/1223276315555450880 …

The Raw data is saying we are already in the worst case scenario. At the very least we can take this information to produce and choose appropriate actions on a personal level. We are ahead of the curve... lets not fall behind, lest we suffer the fate of the worst of us.

The Sun went red from the smoke while still high in the sky in New Zeland tonight. I’ve never seen that here.
