Most of the world’s data is likely to exist outside of clouds/data centers, we have a huge opportunity to move compute closer to where the data is. By using edges to pre-process and manage the flow of data we can make smart decisions to analyze/interpret data where it is created.

When we think about this at scale and its impact on sustainability, it seems that every time we deal with data where it starts, we don’t have to move it over great distances and store it in multiple places.

The net effect is that edges reduce the aggregate energy needed to do almost any real-world data processing task and given the expected scale of IT and cloud edges this could truly make a difference in the environmental impact of global IT.
