They're photographers who make a high school volleyball player's day by capturing the moment she spiked the ball, and putting that moment in the newspaper for her grandma to clip and save for a family memento that will last a lifetime.

They're editors who get cranky about some seemingly arcane point of grammar because the English language still matters to them, and they find beauty in communicating cleanly, clearly and concisely.

They're feature writers who profile the great teacher who spent half a century in the community and retired having influenced more lives than any pop star on a magazine cover.

And they're so committed to their jobs that they still put out the paper on the day a gunman storms their newsroom and kills five of their colleagues.https://twitter.com/capgaznews/status/1012549267368693760 …

There is a correlation between government corruption and shrinking news rooms at all levels

This is probably the most important reply here. And the most truthful. As a former journalist, I’ve seen it firsthand in our little community.

Those five tweets have captured the essence of their working lives the best of any comments I have seen.

Sorry I don't agree with this. The majority of these legacy newspapers are doing nothing worthwhile or special for anyone. They still exist for what are nearly entirely business/capital/stocks/holding kinds of purposes and not for their actual product being in demand.
-
Wrong. Local newspapers are still important to many communities. Not all but many.

See the tweet above about grandma clipping her grandkids picture and proudly putting it on the fridge. Yeah, it’s cheesy, but I loved when my grandma did this when I was a kid. (No athletic pics but coverage of spelling bees and grade level projects that got me a little ink.)
-
Yes but the problem is today's grandparents are retweeting that photo on their Facebook from 100 photos of the kids instantly uploaded in real-time. 60 year old's can print hardcopy photos from their iPhones.
-
There are thousands of grandparents that still rely on printed news and do not use social media
-
Right but they don't 'rely on it' at all. They can simply watch television. Their grandchildren show them stuff on FB and even that generation of old folks is disappearing. 60 and under mastered their iphone local news apps etc.

You are acting as if you know the habits of every single person. That is called generalizing, which often leads to misrepresentation and oversimplification. You simply don’t know as much as you are pretending to. Have a nice day.

Newspapers are down 10% on average year over year over year (at least that's what my former publisher told me). Paper I worked for is down to a circulation of maybe 20k over a population of over 300k. Hedge funds rule the day in the paper industry. Fact.

This x 1000000. The first thing my family pulled out to share when my grandfather died was an old profile of him from The Capital. It was probably the most boring assignment in the whole world for that reporter but it meant the world to us.

And with far more criticism than praise, while being accused of favoring one over another, when you just want to a good job and get it right.

Man this was awesome, a reality check. We can't take these things for granted. Let's support people doing the dirty work, the hard work.
